The SUArt Galleries is the home of the Syracuse University Art Collection, the primary repository for art on the Syracuse University campus. The collection is comprised of a diverse, encyclopedic group of fine art and ethnographic objects by international makers; and represents styles and time periods from pre-history to the present. Important collections include 20th century American paintings, prints, and photography; a comprehensive collection of western graphic art, and diverse ethnographic collections. The donations made by artists, alumni, and philanthropists combined with planned purchases make the Syracuse University Art Collection a vital educational and artistic resource for the students and faculty of the University as well as the greater Syracuse community.
The small selection of art and artifacts brought together in this exhibition emphasize not only the diversity of the University's collection but also the array of interests and generosity of our benefactors. Some of the artists represented in this collection include: Vito Acconci, Donald Sultan, Wolf Kahn, Robert Kipniss, Gaston Lachaise and William Clift.
Over the past five years the art collection has accepted works including paintings from prominent contemporary artists; print portfolios from the leading printmaking institutions; and a collection of photography that boasts the most influential names in the field. These gifts and purchases reinforce the collection’s current focus on twentieth century American art, especially print media and works on paper; and fortify the collection’s educational and aesthetic objectives as we move into a new millennium of art making.
With this exhibition the SUArt Galleries acknowledges the many contributions made by the friends of the Syracuse University Art Collection. Their continued support and generosity will direct the continued success of a significant and respected collection of art and artifacts.
