Maysles Films Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Syracuse University Lubin House
January 30 - March 18, 2005
Albert Maysles, a 1949 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, and his late brother David, have made five films documenting Christo and Jeanne Claude's major public art projects, including Valley Curtain, Running Fence, Umbrellas, Surrounded Islands, and Christo in Paris. Maysles will continue this work with a film on The Gates that chronicles the project from the birth of the idea in 1979 through its February 2005 display in Central Park.
From January 31 through March 18, the Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery at Lubin House will present Maysles Films Christo and Jeanne Claude. This exhibition will look at more than 30 years of filmmaking by the brothers as they sought to capture on film the planning of each project, the political process each artwork engendered, the transforming qualities of the Maysles' work on the site, and the people who saw and lived with the art. In addition to daily screenings of the Maysles brothers' earlier films, this exhibition will include still photos that document the act of filming as an integral part of each project, family photos, and a display of the camera and recording device used by the brothers. During the planned February 12-27 period that The Gates is available in Central Park, the Palitz Gallery will be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for our alumni. You are also invited to warm yourself with a hot drink at Lubin House after your stroll through the park. Call Lubin House for availability of the gallery during the Maysles exhibition.
